Quest to be Healthier: A Week of Plant Based (ish) Eating

I am in a constant battle with living life and trying to be healthier. Is a get older and have a very busy lifestyle filled with business travel, constant eating out, and a fight to find the time and place to exercise what has always been hard for me has gotten even more difficult.

I have accepted the fact that I need to constantly incorporate small lifestyle changes and just keep trying.  Doing a little bit is better than doing nothing and a little bit here and a little bit there all adds up.  I’ve reached the point that I’ll be happy for the smallest improvement and just keep working doing more.

I decided on a small task.  One weekend of plant based eating.  It was a pretty easy weekend.  I actually like a lot of fruits and vegetables, so I headed to the grocery story and filled my cart with a variety of different fruits and vegetables.  I had so many options that I wasn’t bored and I enjoyed the weekend so much that I decided to extend it for a week.

This is where I ran into trouble, I had to head out of town on Monday so was stuck with airport food and then restaurants once I got to my destination.  Living in Los Angeles you will find a variety of restaurants to meet your eating lifestyle so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect on the road in Montana for the week.  I did make my own rules and my own definitions of what I would be eating, but even taking that into account, to say it was a challenge almost doesn’t do justice to just how hard it was.  Several times I was going to give up but each time I found something.  It wasn’t a perfect week and I’m sure some of the items sneaked in ingredients that I was trying to stay away from like butter and possibly some milk but I remembered that whatever I did it was better than doing nothing and I did make it through the week.

I’m pretty confident that I won’t be adopting a plant based diet and I know I won’t completely cut out processed foods but I do also know that I can increase my plant based food intake and cut back on the processed foods and still be better off.  I am a sell professed foodie so I do enjoy a variety of foods that I’m not quite ready to cut off completely but I can put in more and healthier options more frequently and do a lot of good for myself.

How do you stay healthy?
